After a difficult journey through arid land, actress Ann-Kathrin Kramer finally reaches a watering hole in Serer Kula, where women, young and old, are getting water. At night, ground water collects here, a broth full of bacteria, excrements and mud.
Many children die from infections that may be prevented by clean water. Unfortunately, this clouded pool is the only watering hole for miles. Three hours are required for the women to make the long journey to collect water for their families. On the way back, women carry jugs that weigh over 20 kilograms.

In the Derra District, Menschen für Menschen already had the opportunity to help: The women here also have to get water, but they only have to turn a faucet on and wait for the water jug to fill. Nearby, animals have access to water, but they no longer contaminate the people’s drinking water. The water here comes from a spring that lies in the nearby mountains. Around 500 farmers and their families now not only have clean drinking water, but also enough water for their agriculture.

The extent to which clean water changes the lives of people in Ethiopia is shown through a visit with a farmer named Abera and his wife, Kirkim: Previously, the family had often been sick, the crops died, and the children went to bed hungry. Today, everyone is healthy. On this small farm - a small oasis in a dry region - mangos, avocados, papayas and onions thrive. The family harvests enough that they can even sell some crops at a nearby market. “It is a present of the earth, when sun and water are really in tune with one another”, says Abera happily.

Soon a well will be build for the people of Serer Kula. So that the people here can drink water without fearing disease, so that the animals also have water, and so that the time that is won can be used for education, an occupation, or the acquisition of food.
“Over 80% of the people of Ethiopia do not have access to clean drinking water. This is especially dramatic for the rural populations. Please help to change this! Make a donation. Thank you!”
