Overwhelming outcome at ZDF Gala honoring Karlheinz Böhm

The organization Menschen für Menschen received an astounding 7,445,657 million euros in donations during the live TV gala honoring Karlheinz Böhm, shortly after his 80th birthday. Markus Lanz hosted the show "'All the Best, Karlheinz Böhm' - A Lifetime for Africa" that took place on Wednesday, April 23, 2008. Donations go directly to projects of the organization Menschen für Menschen - founded by Karlheinz Böhm in 1981 - and the new education program "ABC-2015". Clips from the life's work of the actor and humanitarian Karlheinz Böhm and his wife and partner in the organization, Almaz Böhm, were shown throughout the show, along with clips of the people of Ethiopia. Even stars, such as Hardy Krüger Jr. and Ann-Kathrin Kramer, got involved and visited project regions, reporting on what they experienced in Ethiopia; they communicated the poverty and the need of the people there and showed what a donation can do to change a life.

Karlheinz Böhm thanked the audience at home and in the studio for their many charitable donations. "I thank you all from the bottom of my heart, on behalf of the people of Ethiopia". With a grand total of over 7 million euros, actors Stephanie and Wolfgang Stumph won the bet that they made at the beginning of the show. They bet that with help from viewers in Germany, Switzerland and Austria, a total of more than 4 million euros would come together, so that 80,000 children in Ethiopia will have a chance at a 6-year education. (A mere 50 euros can secure an education for a child in Ethiopia.) Through the education program "ABC-2015", Menschen für Menschen hopes to dramatically increase the literacy rate and give hundreds of thousands of children the opportunity to learn.
