Late 2006, the members of the band Killerpilze made their first journey to Ethiopia and were shocked at the state of a school in Abdul Kadir: Students were sitting close together on the floor, in dark rooms. For the Killerpilze it was unthinkable - could someone actually learn here? With the “Punk macht Schule” campaign, they wanted to make possible the building of a new school. Hundreds of young people started small-scale campaigns to help raise money and support the band in their endeavor. Thanks to their help, the school could be built, and there was enough money leftover to build a water station! 400 students from the region now have a chance at education and a better life! At the beginning of this year, the Killerpilze went back to Ethiopia for the opening ceremony of the school.
Young people in Germany and elsewhere can continue to support our work by starting campaigns and/or becoming “Jugendscout” for Menschen für Menschen. For more information, please visit www.ichwillgerechtigkeit.de.

Nasir and his sister, Ikram, are two of the lucky 400 students who get to attend the Abdul Kadir Lower Primary School in East Ethiopia. Their parents are poor farmers, who can neither read nor write. Nasir and Ikram are the first of six siblings who are able to attend school - “for themselves and for the country”, the parents said.

Over half of Ethiopia’s population cannot read or write and 80% live off their own agriculture. Even today, only 1 in 2 children have the opportunity to attend school. Without an education, this generation will live like their parents, always dependent on the next generation, living in poverty.
Through the program “ABC-2015”, Menschen für Menschen hopes to secure an education for hundreds of thousands of children in Ethiopia.
Shukuri is one of these children, hoping for a chance to learn. At this time, she is still helping her parents work, instead of going to school. Until workers from Menschen für Menschen visited a school with the 8-year-old girl, she did not know what a school is.
