Karlheinz Böhm, founder of the Menschen für Menschen foundation, is to receive the 2007 Balzan Peace Prize. The Balzan Prize for Humanity, Peace and Brotherhood amongst Peoples, is only awarded every three to five years and at 2 million Swiss francs is the world’s top peace prize. The president of the Balzan Prize Foundation, ambassador Bruno Bottai, gave the following reasons for awarding the Humanity, Peace and Brotherhood amongst Peoples Prize to Karlheinz Böhm: "For a life’s work in the services of humanity and peace, for an extraordinary level of personal commitment, for an outstandingly successful network of specific aid programmes in Ethiopia, one of the oldest and poorest countries on this earth." Some of the previous prize winners have been Pope John XXIII, Mother Teresa of Calcutta, The UN Refugee Agency and The Red Cross.
