Menschen für Menschen is setting big goals: through the program "ABC-2015", hundreds and thousands of children are to receive an education, and the literacy rate is projected to be drastically increased. In "ABC-2015", the first three letters of the alphabet symbolize the ability to read and write, and "2015" the year by which Menschen für Menschen hopes to achieve its goal. Menschen für Menschen is trying to diminish the crisis in education in Ethiopia and thereby give the people there a chance at a better life.

In Ethiopia, ca. 30 million people out of a population of 80 million cannot read or write. Half of all the children have never attended school. These inadequacies are - in the eyes of  Karlheinz Böhm - the main hindrances of the growth of the economy and society; without education, there can be no progress: "The strengthening of the education system is necessary to our work."
Endeavors in the field of education are being intensified. Spending for the field of education will remain high, without neglecting agricultural, water, health, infrastructural, or woman and social programs. The building of primary and secondary schools is to dramatically increase the chances for children to receive an education.

"ABC-2015" is also relevant for adults, along with children and adolescents, through the goal to increase literacy rates. Access to courses in writing and reading, as well as computer courses are to be furthered; libraries are to be stocked and facilities to further one’s education made available.
Almaz Böhm is heading the initiative for education. "The program is especially significant for girls", she explains. "Going to school secures them from having to marry while they themselves are still children, at 18 already having three children of their own, and living in the same poverty as their mothers." Girls have to help around the house, carry firewood and water, oftentimes from a place hours away from their homes. Because Menschen für Menschen is able to build water sites and deliver clay ovens that use firewood sparingly, girls now have the option to attend school.

"'ABC-2015' is not just about learning to read and write", explains Almaz Böhm. "The program will change society altogether." Because those with schooling have the opportunity to earn their own money and make their own decisions. Those who have attended school know about contraception, hygiene, and about human rights.
