Half of all HIV-infected people live in Africa. One third of the Ethiopian population is infected with tuberculosis. One million Ethiopians are blind. But whereas in Germany a doctor cares for an average of about 390 inhabitants, in Ethiopia a medical specialist is responsible for about 32,500 people. In the country areas there is often no medical aid at all. As a result of the catastrophic medical care situation, even harmless illnesses are often lethal.
Menschen für Menschen is endeavouring to combat this predicament with the construction of medical centres, clinics and hospitals, accompanied by intensive training and further education programmes for doctors and nurses.
In addition, Menschen für Menschen has launched a large-scale anti-HIV campaign that not only cares for the infected, but also combats the causes of new infections. The distribution of a million free condoms in the project regions is only one of the measures. The goal of numerous campaigns is to break the taboo about AIDS and educate people.
