The schoolgirl hostel at Yayu accommodates 64 young women in simple six-bed rooms. The hostel is a stroke of luck for intelligent girls like Yenenesh – young women who come from remote villages where there is only a primary school. Inconceivable that a girl should be able to live far from her family and the village community. And just so that she can attend the grammar school! Yenenesh was one of the first residents of the hostel. She is now twenty years old, has finished school, has moved to a room in the village and works as an assistant at the local council office. Marriage? Family? She shakes her head. “Not until I have completed my training and worked for a few years, maybe then.” Words that sound familiar to us, but mean an enormous development for a young woman in Ethiopia.
