The almost 80 millions Ethiopians can be subdivided into about 90 different ethnic groups. The main groups are the Oromo in the south, the one-time politically and culturally dominant Amhara in the centre of the country and the currently dominant Tigre in the north-west.

As Semitic language the official language Amharic is related to Hebrew and Arabic. However, in Ethiopia there are over 70 other languages: Tigrish is common mainly among Christians in the north and north-west, Oromic is the language of the Oromo in the south of the country.
