A total of 26,053 kilometres cross-country roads, only 3,656 kilometres of them hard surfaces, cross the rugged landscape of Ethiopia. And a single railway line connects Addis Ababa with Djibouti. Domestic trade is extremely restricted.
In the rainy season the transport routes, of which only rare stretches are asphalt-coated, are often impassable. As a result, the people are often cut off from markets and medical facilities for weeks.
